The passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the last day of travel.

Visitors from many countries need a visa to enter Tanzania. The requirements can vary, so it’s best to check with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your country before traveling.

All European & American citizens need a visa which you can apply for prior to departure or upon arrival. The cost for European and Canadian citizens is $50 and for $100 for US citizens. Obtaining your visa on arrival is a relatively simple process. On entering JRO airport you will see two lines.

3. What vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?

When entering Tanzania and Zanzibar directly from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no compulsory vaccinations are required, in particular no yellow fever vaccination.

The following vaccinations are recommended for Tanzania: Hepatitis A, for longer stays or special exposure also against hepatitis B, yellow fever, typhoid, rabies and meningococcal disease (ACWY).
Since January 2023, there are no more COVID-19 restrictions in Tanzania. Vaccinations or PCR tests are no longer required for entry. For up-to-date information, please contact your family doctor, the tropical institute or the

According to the WHO, the risk of yellow fever is classified as very low.

If you still opt for this preventive vaccination, the following information is particularly important!

What side effets can occur after a yellow fever vaccination ?
Up to 10% experience flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue, joint and limb pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, and occasionally abdominal pain within 4-7 days of vaccination. Serious side effects in certain groups of people cannot be ruled out.
For which people a yellow fever vaccination is not suitable ?
Because of the higher risk of serious side effects, children under 6 years of age, people over 60 years of age and pregnant women should not receive a yellow fever vaccination or should only receive it if there is a high and unavoidable risk of yellow fever infection.

People with a chicken protein allergy or allergy to other components of the vaccine are not allowed to receive this vaccine.

4. Which insurance policies should you take out?

It is advisable to take out travel cancellation insurance. In some cases, a refund will be made for long-distance travel, but only up to a certain amount in the event of cancellation. Please check with your insurance company to see whether you are well covered.
When entering Tanzania, we strongly recommend that you take out international travel health and repatriation insurance. In addition to the usual treatment costs, this should also include the costs for a possible rescue flight to Germany. The probability that this will be necessary is extremely low, but if this happens, costs could run into six figures.
It is also advisable to take out luggage insurance to protect against theft and loss and to take out travel cancellation insurance.
